IGNATIEFF FOLLOWS DION’S WEAK LEAD ON ARCTIC SOVEREIGNTY

Following former Liberal leader Stephane Dion in signing his support for the Coalition, pushing a job-killing carbon tax and admitting that a GST hike is on the table, Michael Ignatieff is also following Stephane Dion’s naïve plan to turn Canada’s Arctic sovereignty over to some sort of an international park:

The facts:

  • Stephane Dion: He said the way to make sovereignty known is to set up national parks and marine protection areas, and invite scientists from around the world to study the effects of climate change and to find solutions. By doing so, “it will be recognized that we are taking care of the north, and many countries will then say it’s better for Canada to be the sovereign power in the North.” (Canadian Press, August 26, 2006)
  • “What we need to do also is to develop national parks, marine protection areas, to bring all the scientists of the world to study the Canadian Arctic,” he said. (Toronto Sun, January 6, 2007)
  • Michael Ignatieff: Canada should push for the creation of an international park that would protect the area around the North Pole, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff said Monday. …  “One of the proposals I’ve read about recently which I strongly support is that I think Canada could be part of an international agreement to make the North Pole, the whole area of the North Pole, an international public park for the world.” (Canadian Press, April 6, 2009)

Michael Ignatieff: Too much time in academia.  Too little time in the real world.
